Welcome to the Wedekind Lab

The Wedekind lab investigates molecular-level interactions between HIV-1 factors, such as Vif and human host proteins. We also also working to understand specific RNA-mediated gene regulation mechanisms employed by riboswitches and small RNA enzymes. The immediate goal of our research is to elucidate the mechanisms of action of these molecules at the atomic level by relating structure to function.

Our broader mission is to provide a foundation for the development of new HIV/AIDS drugs, antibiotics, and RNA-based therapeutics that will translate into improvements in public health.
The techniques employed include: X-ray crystallography, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), comparative modeling, single- and multi-turnover kinetics, organic synthesis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, Raman (Carey Lab at CWRU), isothermal titration colorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, molecular biology, analytical ultracentrifugation and dynamic light scattering.http://www.cwru.edu/med/biochemistry/faculty/carey.htmlhttp://www.cwru.edu/med/biochemistry/faculty/carey.htmlshapeimage_14_link_0shapeimage_14_link_1
We are currently funded by grants from the PHS/NIH: R01 GM063162 and R33 AI076085. We are also grateful for NCRR award S10 RR026501 for new X-ray instrumentation that is housed in the Structural Biology and Biophysics Facility.http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/Structural-Biology-Biophysics/http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/Structural-Biology-Biophysics/shapeimage_15_link_0shapeimage_15_link_1
